Bucks Heroes

We are working with under-served communities around Buckinghamshire to collate and curate stories from the local people and landscape. Bucks Heroes project is about celebrating ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things making them everyday heroes, who have contributed to the history of Bucks.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this project collaborates with the local community to showcase our many heroes through exciting and unusual activities in the new Discover Bucks People gallery. We are looking for local heroes and would love to hear your story or that of your family or friends. If you would like to nominate an individual from Bucks who is a local hero please get in touch with our Bucks Heroes Programme Manager on bucksheroes@discoverbucksmuseum.org.

We have also converted our ground floor temporary exhibition room into a flexible community and learning space to be used by schools, community groups and visitors while they go round the new galleries.

The project will create a programme of gallery and online activities around the Bucks heroes themes, support community events and present a Bucks Heroes Exhibition in 2023. Watch this space for more news and What’s On for forthcoming events.

Bucks Heroes Stories

The Bucks Heroes Project have collaborated with Building Futures to develop the stories the Project was collecting, through the media of film. Those who applied for the course were all from the Building Futures programme and were interested in exploring how film making can be both enjoyable, but also a potential career path. Those on the course had very limited experience of working with film but with the expertise of Fernando Productions a wide skill-set was taught in a very short time. During the eight week course the participants learnt to use cameras, record sound and interview people. All of the filming was edited by Lawrence Fernando and developed into an intro film about the project followed by four interviews from ‘Bucks Heroes’.

They will be released on our YouTube channel on the following dates:

25 May 2023 – Intro film – Watch the film
1 June 2023 – Ranjula – Watch the film
8 June 2023 – Ben – Watch the film
15 June 2023 – David – Watch the film
22 June 2023 – Sri Interview and Sri Dance

The Gadirova Twins Interview – Ongoing

Our Bucks Heroes project had the fantastic opportunity to interview Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova, Olympic Artistic Gymnasts. We wanted to share their story through the project to inspire other young people across Buckinghamshire. In the interview we find out the importance of sisters, family, friendship and in the area of gymnastics, coaching support is often key to overcoming personal challenges especially those that occurred for many young people due to the COVID19 pandemic.
