Step into the world of the Saxons and celebrate the opening of our new SAXON exhibition with a vibrant day of living history, storytelling and discovery. Meet Saxon warriors and skilled craftspeople as they bring the past to life through authentic dress, demonstrations and fascinating insights into everyday life over 1,300 years ago. With activities for all ages, it’s the perfect way to experience history up close.
Be the first to discover our exciting new exhibition The SAXONS, a major new immersive exhibition at Discover Bucks Museum exploring Buckinghamshire’s Saxon past through extraordinary archaeological discoveries. Step into early medieval life as you encounter the Princely Burial at Taplow, the Warlord of Marlow and artefacts from 122 graves uncovered at the Wendover Saxon Cemetery, many on display for the first time.
Throughout the day, enjoy immersive storytelling sessions with The Red Phoenix, inspired by Anglo-Saxon myths, dragons and saints, kings and queens, heroes and monsters, and the powerful gods of the Saxon world. Sessions run at 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm and 3.3pm giving families plenty of opportunities to gather, listen and be transported to another time.
Your admission ticket includes access to four free expert talks from re-enactment specialists Wulfheodenas (recommended for ages 10+). Discover the story of the Taplow Barrow, a princely 7th-century burial overlooking the Upper Thames (10:30am); explore what archaeology reveals about early Anglo-Saxon female clothing (12:00pm); uncover the mystery of the Marlow Warlord (2:00pm); and learn about the 7th-century burial known as the Ford Laverstock Warrior (3:30pm). Free tickets for these talks must be booked when purchasing your admission tickets.
Get hands-on with a range of creative activities designed to bring Saxon skills to life. Children can decorate their very own Saxon sword and shield, hunt for Saxon coins in our dig pit using mini metal detectors and create a coin rubbing to take home.
Alongside re-enactments and crafts, your ticket also includes entry to The SAXONS exhibition and all museum galleries. You can also add entry to the Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery for an additional charge, making it a full day of exploration and adventure for the whole family.
