Wednesday 26 October – Meet our Bucks Hero: Valerie Williamson
Awarded the British Empire Medal
Come and hear Valerie tell the story of how she discovered archery. Even though Valerie couldn’t walk until ten years old, she became so skilled in archery that she competed for Britain in the 1980 Paralympics, winning silver and bronze medals. “In 1980, we were looked upon as people with disabilities trying to do sport. By the year 2000, Paralympic athletes were recognised as athletes with a disability – and that’s a very different way of looking at it.”
Talks at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm (each talk lasts for 15 minutes followed by a short Q&A and medal handling session).
National Paralympic Heritage Trust pop-up Museum
The pop-up museum will also be coming to the Museum and provides a unique opportunity for us to share the Paralympic Heritage, Buckinghamshire is famous for. The panels, handling collection and interactive activities tell the story ranging from Professor Sir Ludwig Guttmann and the early games to Paralympic athletes and sports.
FREE (places for the talks are limited so please pre-book your tickets to avoid disappointment)
